CD-Protect works on the principle
of direct hardware coding on the CD-ROM. While trying
to read an original CD, unreadable sectors(intentional
defective areas on the recording surface) are reported.
These areas cannot be copied to the hard drive. The
attempt to read the CD with a copying software is either
directly terminated or takes up to several hours. Copying
to a blank CD is thus hardly possible with the copy
protection.

The most casual illegal copying activities
are done at home by end-users with various copying tools
and emulating softwares (creation of duplicate image)
such as Nero, CloneCD, CDSpace, Daemon tools, Alcohol
120%, CDR-Win and Virtual CD-ROM.
Some well-known company¡¯s copy protection
solutions were in vain due to low effectiveness because
of stronger burning programs that allowed illicit copying
of not only the original contents but also the copy
protection applied software.
Despite its copy resistance, hardware lock-key
methods have the weakness because of its high cost.
